Aiko Sugihara delivered a stunning performance in the women’s floor exercise final, defeating Britain’s duo Ruby Evans and Abigail Martin.
During qualification, Sugihara placed fourth behind Romania’s Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, compatriot Rina Kishi, and Ruby Evans.
In the final on Saturday (Oct. 25), Sugihara collected a total of 13.833 points, higher than Evans (13.666) and Martin (13.466).
Following her improved performance in the final that led to gold, Sugihara said she was happy.
“This medal is not just an object or a result. It carries deep meaning. It feels heavy because it’s something I truly wanted,” Sugihara said.
“I feel this gold medal is a victory shared with my family, fans, and everyone who has always supported me. That’s why it means so much.”
Before winning world championships gold, Sugihara’s career had not been particularly bright.
She was part of Japan’s team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but did not get the chance to compete.
Recalling that experience, Sugihara said it was “really tough.”
“I was only a reserve, so of course I felt disappointed. But that disappointment gave me strong motivation to compete at this year’s world championships. I wanted to really participate,” she said.
Earlier, Sugihara also won bronze on the balance beam at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
How did she sum up her performance, returning home with two medals?
“I only heard the cheering voices from the crowd, and that turned into power for me. Because I truly enjoyed myself, maybe that’s what led to these two medals today,” she said.
As for her future plans, Sugihara said she wants to become stronger.
“There’s still some regret in the all-around, so I want to be stronger for next year’s selection,” Sugihara said.
“Also, next year there will be the Asian Games in Nagoya, and I hope to compete there.”
Ruby Evans, who took home the silver medal, also expressed her happiness.
“I’m really happy… it feels quite unbelievable,” said Ruby, who placed third in qualification.
“I didn’t expect much, so this medal is really just a bonus.”
