American gymnast Brody Malone clinched the gold medal in the horizontal bar at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

In the final held at Indonesia Arena on Saturday (Oct. 25), Malone scored 14.933 points, surpassing Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto, who took silver, and Britain’s Joe Fraser, who claimed bronze.

The horizontal bar gold was Malone’s first world championships title, and he expressed great joy about the achievement.

“I was really happy with it [gold medal]… I thought the routine was really well and I'm really happy with it,” said Malone.

During qualifications, Malone ranked sixth with a score of 14.166 points.

When asked about the “recipe” behind his improvement in the final, he explained that he had fixed one of his key elements called the “winkler.”

“In qualifications I didn't get credit for my first skill called a winkler because I was a little bit too pikey. So, the recipe for this was just to make sure that I kept my body straight so that I got credit for it,” Malone said.

“I knew if I kept my body straight and got credit for that skill that I was going to be able to score really well and it worked out.”

Hashimoto, who took silver on the horizontal bar, said he was pleased —especially after also winning the all-around gold in Jakarta.

“I feel happy,” he said briefly.

When asked about his future goals after collecting multiple Olympic and world championship golds, the 24-year-old gymnast replied, “I want another gold medal at the Olympics, both in individual and team events. Two golds.”

Joe Fraser, who earned bronze, also shared his excitement, calling the result a “big success.”

“I am over the moon. I am so proud with myself and the team,” he said.
