Angelina Melnikova claimed her second gold medal at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships after winning the women’s vault final on Friday (Oct. 24).
The 25-year-old gymnast had won her first gold in the all-around final held a day earlier.
In the final at Indonesia Arena, Jakarta, Melnikova scored 14.466 points, finishing 0.433 ahead of Canadian gymnast Lia-Monica Fontaine, who took the silver medal.
Melnikova said she was happy with her second gold in Jakarta, calling it “unexpected”.
“I can’t explain my emotions, I still can’t believe this,” said Melnikova, adding that she could not wait to celebrate the world championships victory with her family.
Melnikova’s score in the vault final was lower than in the qualification round, where she recorded 14.499 points.
The silver medal went to Lia-Monica Fontaine, who collected 14.033 points.
Fontaine said she was happy with the silver, as the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships was her first world championships appearance.
“It’s definitely a surprise because just coming to world championships was definitely a big thing for me,” said Fontaine.
“I would say I’am pretty happy with the experience.”
The bronze medal went to American gymnast Joscelyn Roberson, who scored 13.983 points.
The result came as a surprise, as Roberson had only ranked eighth —the last qualifying spot— in the preliminary round with 13.599 points.
As a result, Roberson said, “I’m super happy [with the medal].”
According to the 19-year-old gymnast, she was still adjusting to the apparatus at the start of the championships and became more comfortable during the final — which helped her secure a medal.
Roberson won team gold at the world championships in Antwerp, Belgium, two years ago.
So, what’s next for the Texas-born gymnast? Does she aim to win another medal at the next world championships?
“I’m not sure if I wanna do next world championships, but I would love to come back and jus love competing for the United States.”
