Donnell Whittenburg proved that age is no barrier to achievement at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. Performing at the Indonesia Arena on Friday (October, 24), he won the gold medal at the age of 31.

Whittenburg, who scored 14,700 points, is the second-oldest gymnast to compete in the rings final. The first was Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece, 34, who finished fifth with 14,300 points.

Moreover, this is Whittenburg's first gold medal at a world championships. The American gymnast won bronze in two similar events, at Nanning 2014 (team) and Glasgow 2015 (vault).
