Turkish gymnast Ferhat Arican’s ambition to complete his medal collection is in jeopardy after finishing 11th on the parallel bars on the second day of qualifications, Monday (Oct. 20).

Ferhat had aimed to secure another medal at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships to round off his list of achievements.

The 32-year-old gymnast previously won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and two gold medals at the European Championships.

In the parallel bars—his signature apparatus—Ferhat scored 14.166 points, narrowly missing the top ten. Daniel Marinov took the tenth spot with 14.200 points.

His fate wasn’t much better on the pommel horse, where he scored 14.033 points, placing 16th.

Asked about his performance, Ferhat said, “I think I did a good job, though of course there were some small mistakes.”

Here’s LOC Media’s interview with Ferhat Arican:

How do you see your performance today?

Today was really interesting for me. I did a good job, one some small mistake of course, but I don't know, I didn't watch my routine. But I think, I know, I never speak about judges. I never speak about judges, but I think a little bit more deduction for me. I don't know, I didn't watch my routine, but I feel my score 5,6 [difficulty score].

It's world ever, biggest D-score on parallel bars. One, 6,1 and second big score 5,9. I didn't do any big mistake. I don't know. I don't know, but I know this is not a good performance. This is not a perfect performance for me, but I didn't understand, I didn't understand to points. I will watch, i will watch, and think about it.

How do you see Turkey’s chances in the final?

Today, we have chance [in] two apparatus final. One apparatus, Adem [Asil] do rings on the final, and [possible] one parallel bars [because] I am first reserve now. First reserve is really bad situation, I think. we miss one final in parallel bars. We coming here [with the target] one all around final, one horizontal bar, rings final, and one parallel bars final, but we missed two [apparatus] finals.

How do you see the progress of artistic gymnastics in Turkiye and other Asian countries since you won your medal in Tokyo?

In the last five years, Turkey really improve the performance

improve the successful and are really in a good generation. We are really good system. we are really making it, making it history. Olympic medal, world medal, European medal. With all of them, I am so happy. I am honored to be captain of the team
